Guangzhou Sports

There are plenty of various modern entertainment centers that provide recreational fun in the city. Golfing, shooting, and boating are some of the popular activities in Guangzhou.
Provided below are a sampling of places for sports and recreation:

  • Street Hockey
  • Ice Hockey
  • Floorball
  • Ice Skating
  • Skateboarding
  • Off 每 Road Adventure
  • The Guangzhou Gymnasium
  • Badminton
  • Bowling
  • Golf
  • Snooker
  • Squash
  • Tennis

  • Street Hockey

The Strange Brew Street Hockey Club, the only street hockey team in Guangzhou, was established in January to bring the game all Canadians played growing up on the cold streets of Canada to the humid climate of Guangzhou.

Hockey enthusiasts gathered some friends and bought some hockey sticks imported from Canada with the help of the hockey store in Metro Mall off Beijing Lu. Though they don't really label themselves a 'team' or a 'league' because it's just a bunch of guys who get together, they do have a lot of fun by making two random teams and play for a couple of hours.

They play every Sunday night by the river on ErshaIsland at 6 pm. A break will be taken in July and August due to the intense heat. Call 1356-023-1914 for more information.

    Ice Hockey

Playing ice hockey at midnight on a hot midsummer night is a surreal experience: 12 huge guys from Dong Bei and Canada going at each other with sticks on ice near Beijing Lu is not really what you expect to find. With rapid speeds, the skates throw ice smoke into the air, filling the rink. Three guys are resting, screaming from the sidelines, this is high octane, impulsive stuff to get the adrenaline pumping.

Play every Friday night from 10 pm to 12 pm at Metro Mall just off Beijing Road

    Floorball

After a triumphant fifth place finish in May's floorball tournament in Beijing, the South China Taipans are on a high. And it shows in the intensity of the pace in training. Founded in March 2002, the team has moved from the Ramada Hotel to a tiny outdoor court at Eastern Place, on to Guangzhou Sports Stadium. Now they ply their trade at the indoor premises of Guangzhou Sports College. The team has had players from well over 15 countries, with a truly international flavor.

Play every Thursday in the indoor basketball courts of the Guangzhou Sports College in Guangzhou Dadao. New players are always welcome.

    Ice Skating

    Glacier Bay Club

Within easy reach of Grandview Plaza, Glacier Bay is the first indoor real ice rink in Guangzhou. Having been in operation for over two years, it's well attended and has built up a popular day and night time crowd. An 800 square meter playground accompanied by an economical Ice Caf谷 provides the chance to unwind between the half hour skating intervals.

Address: 5/F, Grandview Plaza, No. 228 Tianhe Road, Guangzhou
    Tel: (8620) 3833-0966
    Opening Hours: 10 am 每 10 pm

    Yeahcool Ice Sports Center

Perched high in another shopping mall near Beijing Lu Pedestrian, Yeahcool Ice Rink is the best rink you'll find for miles around. Set to be host to all levels of competition, it boasts an area of 1,800 square meters and is armed with a cutting-edge intelligence system as well as comfortable leisure zone. Carnivals, mixed theme parties integrating music, DJ's and live performances are often put on in and around the ice. And expect it to be a bargain due to still being relatively unnoticed.

Address: 7/F, Metro Mall, No. 63 Xihu Road, Guangzhou
    Tel: (8620) 8334-2958
    Opening Hours: 10 am 每 10 pm

    Skateboarding

As the pioneering city in the region for skateboarding, there is a huge pool of boarding fanatics. However, there are currently no official skateboard parks. Instead, skaters take to the sidewalks to pull their tricks, just like "back in the day", therefore honing the best street-skating skills around. Parks, parking lots and spaces surrounding buildings tend to quench the skating thirst. But most of the kicks may be gained from trying to avoid discerning security guards. There are plenty of undiscovered spots out there however.

Check out these three main hang-outs in Guangzhou, but just avoid those pesky in-line skaters:

    • Yin Xiong Square in Liu Xing Qian Xian;
    • The Square and long smooth sidewalk by Zhong Da Ferry;
    • And the Square by Ren Ming Bridge on Yanjiang Lu.
    Off 每 Road Adventure

Now you can bask on any of Guangdong's beaches, like Nan' Ao in Shenzhen, after a hard day of riding on your very own ATV (All Terrain Vehicle). For USD 500 and up you can buy your own four-wheel off road vehicle from East-Concept manufacturing in Zhuhai.

According to one of their merchants, it is illegal to ride ATVs on the streets. It was suggested that drivers drive the ATVs on the coast or other rural areas of Guangzhou.

    The Guangzhou Gymnasium

Guangzhou's main fitness center is named The Guangzhou Gymnasium and will host select events at the 2008 Olympic Summer Games.

The Guangzhou Gymnasium sports complex is situated at the foot of the Baiyun Hills in a protected landscape, an open space in the otherwise very dense city of Canton, where construction is not permitted. The public facilities for outside activities are set amidst the greenery in the 18 hectare natural park.

The Guangzhou Gymnasium is equipped with all the facilities needed for the organization of a major sports competition. It has a covered multi sport stadium seating up to 13,000, training and warm-up rooms, a pool, a smaller center for leisure sports, a restaurant, locker rooms, a press center and a control laboratory.
