Legend of Chinese Holidays
Study Abroad in Beijing with the Leaders Providing the Best Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Programs in China!

There are three public holidays in China:

Holiday Dates
Chinese New Year

Takes place sometime in January or February and usually occurs during the semester break.

The date for the Chinese New Year Holiday changes every year, but it is recognized by the Chinese Government as an official 7 day holiday. The holiday for Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, generally takes place in January or February (depending on the year) and will fall in between the semester break if attending a university.

Labour Day Holiday

May 1 - 3 (But there will be 7 consecutive days off from May 1 - 7. Please see below for explanation.)

National Holiday October 1 - 3 (But there will be 7 consecutive days off from October 1 - 7. Please see below for explanation)

Class Scheduling During May Week and National Week Holidays

The National Holiday (October) and the Labour Day Holiday (May) is in fact only a three day holiday. The Chinese government will generally have students attend classes the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) prior or after the holiday date. This way, students can have 7 consecutive days off when combined with the weekend. During the holidays PRC Study will generally organize an excursion for students who wish to participate.

Semester Breaks if Studying at Universities for One Year Programs

Semester Break Break Period
Winter Break The Winter Break takes place from the end of the Fall Semester to the start of the Spring Semester if studying at a university, and the break generally lasts 5 to 7 weeks depending on the university.
Summer Break The Summer Break takes place from the end of the Spring Semester to the start of the Fall Semester if studying at a university, and the break generally lasts 5 to 7 weeks depending on the university.

Holidays & Breaks If Studying at the PRC Study Academy

1. The PRC Study Academy will follow the holiday rules for the May Week and October Week holidays. So if your programs falls in within these holiday dates, there will be three days of public holiday with 7 consecutive days off, where there will be make up classes based according to the schedule above.

2. The PRC Study Academy does not have semester breaks for one year programs. The one year program runs as a consecutive 40 weeks program, inclusive of any holidays. This means that if your program falls during the Chinese New Year, you will have a holiday with no make up classes and this will be considered part of the 40 weeks program. However, the advantage of the smaller class sizes at the PRC Study Academy will allow students to have more time with the teachers and to learn Mandarin Chinese much faster in the 40 consecutive weeks than in the larger class sizes offered at the universities. Additionally students can save time by not having to take semester breaks at universities.

3. For all PRC Study Academy programs, it is advised that students check the program start and end dates to determine which holidays they may hit and how this may affect their class scheduling. For example, if your program coincides with the Chinese New Years holiday, then that means that there will be no classes during the holidays and these days will still be considered part of your program duration.
