Kunming University of Science and
Technology
Kunming University of Science and Technology (KUST) is located in Kunming,
China's beautiful "Spring City" and capital of the mysterious and attractive
Yunnan Province, the province located "in the remote south of the colorful
clouds." ?As the largest university in Yunnan and one of China's best-known
universities, KUST became an independent public higher education institution
in September 1954.
In October 1999, this university and Yunnan Polytechnic University merged
under the name of Kunming University of Science and Technology, approved
by Yunnan Provincial Government and the Chinese Ministry of Education.
The university consists of three campuses: Lianhua campus, Xinying campus
and Bailong campus. The three campuses cover an area of 120 hectares,
with the total area over 900,000 square meters and many important construction
projects still in progress.
KUST has founded a state-level engineering research center, two
provincial- and/or ministerial- level test stations, two provincial
level research and development centers, three provincial-level
key laboratories, one Class A design and research institute, and
one Class-A environmental assessment institute. In total, there
are 32 research institutes, 13 research laboratories and 13 research
centers at university or faculty levels in Kunming University
of Science and Technology.
The university attaches great importance to both domestic and international
exchange and cooperation, enjoying links with nearly 70 universities from
20 countries around the world and solid ties with over 100 domestic local
governments, institutions of higher education and research centers. Research
activities in the university play an important and critical role in Yunnan
Province as well as in the whole of southwest China.
The long-term goal for 2010 is to develop the university into a first-class
institution with distinctive features, an important provincial and regional
training base for advanced technical talents, a research and development
base for basic and hi-tech research, hi-tech industrialization and also
a research and consulting center for regional social and economical development.
There are over 40,000 students currently studying at Kunming University
of Science and Technology.
KUST consists of 21 faculties, including science, engineering, economics,
management, arts, law and education. With 32 research institutes, 13
research laboratories and 13 research centers, the university offers
a complete list of degree programs, as well as other programs including
post-doctoral, preparatory, continuing education, vocational training
and Chinese language training for international students.
The school also recruits students from all over China, Hong Kong, Macau
and Taiwan. In addition, KUST is authorized to recruit international
students for degree programs including bachelor to master and Ph.D courses.
There are 67 bachelor programs, 74 master programs and 24 doctoral programs.
It also has four state-authorized post-doctoral stations, one state-level
key academic subject and 18 provincial-level key academic subjects.
The university runs a number of Mandarin Chinese programs. Short term
programs are offered in the summer and winter, lasting 4 to 8 weeks
in length, while longer-term programs with the duration of study ranging
from one semester to one year and above, but no longer than two years,
are available in Spring and Fall. A number of different levels of proficiency
are available from beginner and intermediate to advanced level. Each
class has four to five international students, usually split into about
ten different classes. Programs focus on Chinese listening, speaking,
reading and writing.
KUST has a highly qualified and experienced team of academic staff
engaged in both teaching and research. The total number of staff
members is about 3,300, including 800 professors and associate professors
and over 1,600 full-time teaching staff. Most of the teachers have
received scholarships and awards from China and abroad. Among the
staff are one member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and a
number of members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Chinese
Academy of Sciences who work jointly with KUST.
In the Chinese language department, there are over ten teachers
teaching Mandarin Chinese classes to international students. All
are native Chinese speakers, accredited by the State Ministry of
Education and have many years of experience in teaching Chinese to
foreign students.
