Dalian University of Technology
Dalian University of Technology (DUT) is located in the beautiful
coastal city of Dalian, Liaoning Province. Dalian University
of Technology is one of China's key universities under the
administration of the Ministry of Education. The university
has developed into a comprehensive university of science and technology,
focusing on the engineering field, as well as sciences and economic
management sciences, social sciences and law.
DUT enjoys a good reputation for its efficient management and
good environment for study. The school is known for its motto: "Unity,
Enterprise, Realism and Originality". DUT has fostered
and trained more than 100,000 professionals in its long history. Now,
with the support of “the 985 Project” and “the
211 Project”, DUT is engaged in grasping the historic opportunity
of rejuvenating the old northeast industrial base, and implementing
a talent-training strategy in the hope of building itself into
a world-famous research-oriented university.
Dalian University of Technology has established cooperation with
almost 140 universities in China and abroad, including Hong Kong,
Macau and Taiwan. The university has also been participating
in academic exchanges and cooperation with more than 70 institutions
of higher education and scientific research in more than 20 countries
and regions. At present, DUT is focusing more on enhancing
its reputation around the world and becoming a more international
university.
The university's main focus is on engineering, but it also
has faculties of management, education and humanities. At
the moment, the Chinese department has more than 300 students enrolled,
including students from the US, UK, Germany, France, Russia, Korea,
Thailand and several African countries. Remarkable achievements
made in the programs offered and the extra-curricular activities
provided are warmly received by both the teaching staff and the
students, attracting more and more newcomers to enroll in the school's
programs.
Two types of Mandarin language programs are offered, intensive
classes (2 – 6 weeks and three months) and regular classes
(one semester and one year). The intensive courses are held
during the summer and winter vacations, starting from mid-January
or mid-July. Class times are flexible, to suit the particular
needs of students, and each class has an average of ten to fifteen
students.
The regular courses start twice a year, in March and September. Students
are placed by an entrance test, with class sizes limited to an
average of 15 people in each. This provides every student
with sufficient individual training time with the teacher in class. Classes
range from elementary, through intermediate and advanced, with
compulsory courses including listening, writing, speaking, reading
and grammar. Classes are from Monday to Friday, with 24 contact
hours for compulsory courses. Mornings are dedicated to taught
sessions, with one afternoon a week also spent in class.
The university also offers preparatory classes for international
students who are interested in taking the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi),
also known as the Chinese proficiency test. The test is designed
to measure the Chinese proficiency level of non-native speakers. HSK
is equivalent to the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)
and offered at three levels: Basic, Elementary-Intermediate and
Advanced.
DUT also offers a wide range of elective courses such as tai chi,
Chinese calligraphy, Chinese culture, Chinese History, audio-visual
speaking practice and cooking. All elective courses are held
in the afternoon. Out of the classroom, speech contests in
Chinese supervised by the teachers are organized once every semester
with all students participating.
Dalian University of Technology has a staff of over 3,000, including
more than 400 professors and over 800 associate professors. Among
the staff are a number of members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences
(CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), not to mention
many recipients of both provincial- and state-level teaching awards
and scholarships.
There are more than 40 teaching staff in the Chinese language
department, all of whom are thoroughly trained and highly experienced
in teaching Chinese as a second language. In addition to
the full-time teachers of Chinese employed for the Chinese programs,
lecturers and professors are invited from the university's
Departments of Chinese Language and Mass Media Journalism to teach
courses for international students.
