Nanjing University
Nanjing University (NU) is one of the top universities in China,
with beautiful campuses and modern teaching and research facilities.
The university is one of China's key comprehensive universities
administrated by the Ministry of Education, and is located in Nanjing,
the ancient capital of six dynasties.
This 100-year-old university has an outstanding quality of education
and excellent facilities. Its 16 schools and 36 departments offer
a full range of courses at all levels. The university also houses
11 national training bases for research and teaching personnel
in basic sciences and liberal arts, and three bases for humanities
and social science research appraised by the Chinese Ministry of
Education.
A great place to live, with a peaceful and beautiful campus, Nanjing
University has countless social activities which are fully open
to overseas students. The university celebrates its anniversary
on May 20 of each year.
Today, Nanjing University consists of two campuses, one in Gulou
and the other in Pukou, with a total area of nearly 600 acres.
The Gulou campus is itself divided into two sections by Hankou
Road: North Garden (Bei Yuan) is where most teaching and research
take place, and South Garden (Nan Yuan) serves as a residential
area for both students and academic staff.
The newer Pukou campus rests in the suburban Pukou District and
became part of Nanjing University in 1993. Pukou campus hosts
undergraduate freshmen, sophomore and junior students and is connected
with the main campus by both shuttle bus and public transportation.
In its history of more than 100 years, Nanjing University has
cultivated a great number of prominent and learned figures, having
thus contributed much to China's revitalization and development.
Nanjing University has been at the forefront of developments in
teaching and research in China, and was the first institution in
the country to adopt student-centered teaching methods.As well
as being the first co-educational Chinese university, Nanjing was
also the first Chinese university to provide doctoral education.
The school has been a pioneer in many fields in China, such as
literature, art, history, philosophy, religion, sociology, biology,
astronomy, physics, geoscience, computer science, and business
studies.
Since China's reform and opening up, Nanjing University has gradually
developed multi-disciplinary programs in humanities, social sciences,
natural sciences, technological sciences, life sciences, modern
engineering and management. With its multi-disciplinary structure
and highly qualified faculty, Nanjing University is one of the
leaders in education among Chinese institutions of higher learning.
Nanjing University has made remarkable achievements in personnel
training. At present, the university has over 41,600 students.
Moreover, seven graduates of Nanjing University have won the American
President's Awards.
Nanjing University is one of the most active universities in China
in terms of its international academic exchanges. Since 1979,
it has set up links with more than 180 universities and institutions
in nearly 30 countries, employed over 1,800 foreign scholars to
teach and give lectures, held more than 120 international conferences,
and more than 2,500 teachers have been sent abroad to pursue higher
degrees and conduct research. Over the years, more than 6,000
international students have studied at the university.
Nobel Prize laureates have been conferred Honorary Doctorates
or Honorary Professorship by the university, while a large number
of world famous statesmen, scientists and social activists, such
as former US President George Bush, former French President Francois
Mitterrand, and former Australian Prime Minister Robert Hawk have
also visited Nanjing University.
In the new century, Nanjing University's aim is to carry forward
its traditions and further its reforms through research and renovations,
to become a comprehensive, research-oriented and internationalized
world-class university.
Nanjing University has top teaching, research and experimental
facilities such as the Analysis Center, the Network and Information
Center, and the Educational Technology Center. Other faculties
include: Ancient Chinese Literature, Regional
and National Histories of the World, Theoretical Physics, Inorganic
Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Physico-chemistry, Astrophysics,
Economic Geology-Geochemistry Petrology, Structural Geology, Hydrogeology
and Engineering, Synoptic Dynamics, Botany and other programs as
befitting a high-class comprehensive university.
In the Chinese Department, specialized teachers are responsible
for an average of 15 students per class. Students are divided
into five different streams reflecting their level of proficiency
in Chinese, which will be tested on entering the university. Short-term
classes are available from May to August, lasting between two to
twelve weeks, as well as the university's semester and year-long
courses, which begin every Spring and Fall.
Core Chinese classes cover aspects of language learning like speaking,
reading, writing, listening, grammar, and newspaper reading. There
are also 20 optional elective courses which students can choose
from to deepen their understanding of Chinese arts and culture,
which include tai chi, calligraphy, Chinese painting, minority
culture, religion, film appreciation, and more.
Core classes take place from 8 am ¨C 12 pm Monday to Friday and
sometimes with two afternoons (2 ¨C 4 pm) also set aside for these
classes. Optional elective classes are normally taught in the
afternoons.
There are 2002 full-time teachers in Nanjing University, 697 of
whom are full or associate professors. Many of the members
of the teaching team at Nanjing University are distinguished and
leading figures in their respective academic fields. Nanjing University
has 27 academicians of the Chinese Academy of
Sciences, three academicians of the Chinese Academy
of Engineering, fouracademicians of the Third
World Academy of Sciences, and 626 doctoral
supervisors.
There are about 35 teachers in the Chinese department teaching
Chinese to international students. Teachers are highly trained,
rich in experience and certified to teach Chinese as a second language.
Library
Founded in 1902, Nanjing University library was expanded in 1979
and covers an area of 20,000 square meters, with 130 staff members.
Nanjing University provides a good environment for teaching and
research, with about 1,000,000 people using the library every year.
Currently, the library has over 4.29 million volumes in its collection,
among which are many valuable ancient books, local histories, and
rare editions. There are ten reading rooms, with 1,300 seats for
readers. Inter-library loans, online databases, digital archives
and electronic periodicals in Chinese and more than 20 foreign
languages are available. The library opens everyday from 8 am
¨C 10 pm.
Recreation Facilities
There is a volleyball court on campus and a gym in the international
students' living area.
Laundry
Laundry facilities are available in the student dormitories.
Dry-cleaning services may be found off campus.
Money & Banking
Banking facilities and ATMs are available on
campus, including a branch of the Bank of China for cash withdrawal
from international bank accounts. A range of services are available
for international students, from opening bank accounts, to money
transfers and foreign currency exchanges.
Medical Care
Nanjing University Hospital serves university students and staff
members, as well as the local community. It is a comprehensive
hospital with experienced doctors and nurses and advanced medical
equipment. The hospital is open 24 hours daily.
Food & Groceries
Nanjing University has a number of grocery stores on campus, and
there are several canteens serving different styles of food daily
at very reasonable prices.
Postal Services
A post office is located inside the university, from which students
can send and receive mail and packages from all over the world.
On-campus student accommodation is available as based on single
or double occupancy. All rooms have standard amenities including
air-conditioning, TV, telephone, bathroom, one or two beds, desks
and chairs. There are also restaurants, an internet caf¨¦, a gym,
washing machines, as well as self-study classrooms located inside
the dormitory building.
Shuttle buses from the university run into the city center every
day, including weekends and public holidays.
