Xiamen has seen great advances in modern development in recent years, including many large commercial areas, huge shopping malls, supermarkets, and small stores with their own unique features. Department stores and shops offering a wide range of merchandise from all over the world make shopping an enjoyable experience.

    Fujian Provincial Art & Craft Xiamen

    When a store has nine Chinese characters in its title it usually means that the shop's owner lacks brevity, or that it is well stocked. In this case it is both. Long famous with tourists, this shop stocks its shelves with quality items perfect for the home. Old, vintage stamps, wicker and rattan baskets, classic reed screens, bamboo curtains, fresh water pearls, authentic Chinese antiques, and all types of souvenirs are carried. The prices are higher than most other such shops but it is well worth a visit.

    Xiamen Cultural Relics Store

    Market mania runs amuck at Xiamen's largest arts and crafts mall. Vendors from all over the Fujian Province and beyond feature their authentic Chinese made goods here, thereby elevating this mall far above the usual detritus of cheap souvenir stands. Fine porcelain, bronze statues, curios, hand woven linens, wicker baskets, reed screens, and coveted Qing vases are just a small sampling of what to expect. Sunday is the market's busiest day, so expect to endure large crowds.

    Zhongshan Road

    Learn Chinese Language in ChinaZhongshan Road is one of the most prosperous traditional and comprehensive commercial areas in Xiamen. With a very long history, the architecture along the road is a combined style of East and West. The large shopping centers, together with a variety of small retail stores here, are characterized by an abundance of items as well as a fairness of price, attracting many tourists.

    The Buses No. 2, 3, 4, 10, 12, 23, 25, 27, and 30 pass by Zhongshan Road, making it not only easy to get to but also so crowded that many stores are open from nine o'clock in the morning until very late at night. North and South Siming Road and Lady Street nearby are also good places for shopping. There are banks, restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, bookstores, music stores, night markets, money changers on the street.

    Xiamen No.1 Department Store
    Even with a rather presumptuous name, this place deserves the built in accolade for it rates as the oldest department store in Xiamen. Shoppers can find the latest fashions and accessories for men, women and kids. Electronics abound including CD players, DVDs, televisions, and all of the most up to date computer equipment. There is also a grocery store laden with local produce. Be forewarned that parking can be a king-hassle on Zhongshan Road; public transportation is recommended.

    Xiahe Road

    Xiahe Road is an up-and-coming commercial street in Xiamen. A number of large commercial plazas and shopping centers are scattered along the road, providing a comfortable and pleasant shopping environment and a large number of good quality commodities.

    Friendship Shopping Mall
    Thoughts to putting the kid's college fund on hold will invade the mind when wandering through this ultra-modern shopping center. Opened in 1992, it offers five credit card tempting floors. All of the latest men's and women's fashions are well stocked. There are also cosmetics, gifts, home accessories and appliances, silks, watches and clocks. A children's playground on the third floor serves as a perfect silencer. Close proximity to the rail station provides easy accessibility.

    Egret Alluvion Shopping & Entertainment City

    Located on the northern part of the Middle Hubin Road, the Egret Alluvion Shopping and Entertainment City can be accessed through Buses No. 8, 12, 26, and 72 so you can enjoy convenient transportation. It is a comprehensive center providing shopping malls, restaurants, and various entertainments. In addition, a series of small theme parks have been built, which often feature traditional folk programs and performances. You'll be sure to have a different shopping experience here.

    Longtou Road on the Gulangyu Island

    This is the main commercial street on Gulangyu Island and features diverse tourist souvenirs. There are plenty of stores on both sides of the street selling handicrafts, calligraphy, and painting. Traditional local crafts such as bead embroidery, lacquer wares, colored sculptures, and colored figurines are very popular among foreign visitors. It is also a good place to buy some dried fish and snacks like pies, peanut crisp, etc. However, when buying dried sea-products, it's best to bargain with the venders so you won't be overcharged.

    SM City Plaza

    Learn Chinese Language in ChinaThe SM City Plaza, which was built with investment money from the Philippines, is situated at the intersection of Xianyue Road and Jiahe Road. With six floors and a construction area of 126,000 square meters, it attracts many world famous business such as Wal-Mart, Watsons, Cybermart, McDonald's, and KFC, making it a combined emporium of furniture, home appliances, and daily commodities.

    SM is one of the biggest shopping malls around Xiamen. The complex also includes an exhibition center, a business club, a gymnasium and some restaurants. The best collection of special local products from Xiamen is on the first floor. The clothes sold here are all in tasteful, fashionable and current. The electronic products are the latest available. Moreover, it has the largest bookstore in Fujian Province.
